Exploring the Technical Squirrel Cage Induction Motor Advantages in Engineering

A three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It is called a “squirrel cage” motor because its rotor resembles the structure of a squirrel cage. When the stator magnetic field induces current in the rotor bars, the rotor produces its own magnetic field. The interaction between the stator and rotor magnetic fields generates torque, causing the rotor to rotate.

Principle of Operation

When three-phase power is supplied to the stator winding, it produces a rotating magnetic field that rotates at synchronous speed. This rotating magnetic field induces voltage in the rotor bars, causing short-circuit currents to flow. These rotor currents create a rotor magnetic field that interacts with the stator field.

The rotor then tries to follow the rotating magnetic field. If the rotor reaches synchronous speed, the relative motion disappears, the induced rotor current drops, and the torque decreases. The rotor slows slightly, relative motion is restored, and new current is induced. As a result, the rotor continues to rotate at a speed slightly lower than synchronous speed.

Motor Structure

  • Stator: Contains a three-phase winding mounted on a laminated iron core inside a metal frame. The windings are spaced 120° apart electrically and mechanically.
  • Rotor: The rotating part that converts electrical energy into mechanical output. It includes the shaft, rotor core, and short-circuited copper or aluminum bars.
  • Squirrel Cage Rotor: Built with laminated steel to reduce eddy-current and hysteresis losses. The conductor bars are usually skewed to reduce cogging and improve starting performance.
  • Fan: Mounted on the rotor shaft to provide cooling and keep the motor temperature within safe limits.
  • Bearings: Support the rotor and allow smooth, stable rotation.

Applications

Squirrel cage induction motors are widely used in industrial systems that require constant speed, self-starting capability, and low maintenance. Common applications include:

  • Centrifugal pumps
  • Industrial conveyor drives
  • Large fans and blowers
  • Machine tools
  • Lathes and other rotating equipment

Advantages

The main squirrel cage induction motor advantages include:

  • Low initial cost
  • Simple and rugged construction
  • Low maintenance due to the absence of brushes and slip rings
  • Good speed regulation under normal operating conditions
  • High efficiency during steady-state operation
  • Effective thermal performance and reliable cooling
  • Compact size and relatively light weight
  • Safe for hazardous environments because there are no brushes to produce sparks

Disadvantages

  • Low starting torque compared with some other motor types
  • High starting current
  • Limited speed control without a variable-frequency drive
  • Speed decreases slightly as load increases
  • Poor power factor at light load
